Landon Donovan is out and Omar Gonzalez is in on the U.S. men’s national team squad for upcoming friendlies at Scotland and Austria, a Los Angeles source tells SI.com.

No reasons were given for Donovan’s absence from the U.S. roster, but González’s presence shows that U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann has no problem calling in LA Galaxy players for these games.

Donovan’s last U.S. appearance came in October’s home World Cup qualifying win against Jamaica. He was somewhat surprisingly pulled from the game at halftime in a decision that Klinsmann described as “performance-based.”

The two-time defending MLS champion Galaxy was eliminated from the MLS quarterfinals on Thursday by Salt Lake. As SI.com and Fox Sports television reported last Monday, Klinsmann is not expected to call up any U.S. national team players who are still involved in the MLS playoffs (a group that includes Graham Zusi, Matt Besler, Brad Davis, Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando).

As those who have watched Donovan's play for LAG since the injury it's clear that it has been bothering him. Obviously the Galaxy asked him to play as they don't have the depth to cover for him but especially the past couple games against RSL you could see him struggle.

It's good that he'll get the time to heal up and he still could possibly decide to go on probably what would be his last winter break in the Premier League, but even if he doesn't the Galaxy should be starting camp early anyways to try to round into some type of form before their early March CCL games.

Donovan's ankle must still be hampering him bc there is no way he'd be left out otherwise! I remember him saying a few weeks ago that it would take 6 weeks for it to heal completely but he's been playing non stop since those comments. Or, Jurgen could be up to his jedi mind games again and if that's the case there is no way clint is called in after seeing his form!

@RonnieThomas Hard to say. He hasn't played well since the injury...so either it's kept him from playing well and he needs to heal up; or as his performances have tailed off since the gold cup, it's another 'only your best will do' message - and Landon hasn't been at his best for the USA since summer. We'll see him in January, or the EPL will....
