The 2013 MLS season was flush with highlight-reel plays, but two stood above the rest in their respective categories.

Vancouver Whitecaps forward Camilo and Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando may have been overlooked for league Best XI honors, but they earned MLS Goal and Save of the Year nods, respectively, Thursday for their spectacular displays.

Camilo’s goal against Portland — a flying scissor kick volley — easily bested Portland maestro Diego Valeri’s opening-day strike against New York, New England forward Juan Agudelo’s back-heel lob against the Chicago Fire and New York DP Thierry Henry’s overhead kick against Montreal.

Rimando’s sprawling double save against the Colorado Rapids was good enough to best LA Galaxy backstop Jaime Penedo’s diving stop of Jordan Harvey; Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts’ double save against the Whitecaps in the same game as Camilo’s wonderstrike; and FC Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez’s denial of LA’s Gyasi Zardes. Currently in line to go to Brazil with the U.S. men’s national team as the third goalkeeper, Rimando earned his second consecutive Save of the Year award.
