USA’s 2014 World Cup group overflowing with history

You wanted a World Cup group with some sumptuous storylines? You got one.

The USA was drawn into a Group of Supreme Death with Germany, Portugal and Ghana, with Jurgen Klinsmann needing to gameplan for the likes of Mesut Ozil and Cristiano Ronaldo while aiming to break the Ghana hex — just to reach the knockout stage. The amount of history that the USA has against its group opponents is staggering, too.

Between Jurgen Klinsmann’s past as a player and manager for Germany; the USA’s World Cup past against Germany that includes The Torsten Frings game; the USA’s epic win over favored Portugal in 2002; not to mention the fact that in addition to Ghana ending the USA’s last two World Cups the Black Stars also eliminated the USA from the U-20 World Cup this past summer AND ended Bob Bradley’s quest to lead Egypt to the World Cup in the African World Cup qualifying playoffs, the storylines are overflowing.

So with the draw reaction still fresh, let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at the past World Cup meetings the USA has had with its future opponents:

USA vs. Germany, Group Stage Opener, 1998 (in which Jurgen Klinsmann scored)

USA vs. Portugal, Group Stage Opener, 2002

USA vs. Germany, Quarterfinals, 2002

USA vs. Ghana, Final Group Game, 2006

USA vs. Ghana, Round of 16, 2010

Underestimate the USA at your own peril.  The US WILL advance and I wouldn't be surprised if they win the group.

Group of death?  I don't think so.  It might be the US's own personal group of death because for some reason they are unable to beat Ghana, but THE group of death is group D.  Three teams better than the US in the same group and one team that recently beat them in Costa Rica.

The US doesn't beat the Germans in competitive matches.

The US will have trouble containing CR7.

Ghana is the US's bogey team.

I forsee a loss to Ghana, a loss to Germany, and a draw with Portugal (too Jekyll & Hyde).

Cheating Germans and an utterly inept ref (possibly paid off, imho).  Ridiculous.

Take a look at the results from the last year or so of each team in the group.  The USA has played FAR more matches.  Also, been playing teams with winning traditions.  Including beating Germany and Italy.  Played Bosnia, Russia, Belgium.  Ghana has played only a couple of matches outside of Africa.  Portugal's track record has not been good at all.

The USA won the group last world cup with England being the pre cup favorite.  Beat Spain in confederations cup prior to that - meeting Brazil in the final and giving them all they could handle (up by 2 goals at half).

USA is not going to dominate but is definitely no longer a push over.
