Toronto FC continued its rebuilding Friday, announcing the signing of Brazilian forward Gilberto as a Designated Player.

The 24-year-old has he joins MLS from Brazilian power Internacional, where he signed in 2011, though he was most recently on loan at Portuguesa. He also spent time on loan at Sporting Recife. Prior to signing with Internacional, he inked his first deal with Brazilian side Santa Cruz.

TFC has a laundry list of need areas, but finding a bona fide go-to forward is high up on the list. Last month, reported that the club was courting European-based standouts Jermain Defoe, Alberto Gilardino and Samuel Eto’o, and the club figures to add more than just Gilberto to the fray.

“We need goals,” new TFC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said during Gilberto’s introductory press conference.

Gilberto has proven he can provide them. He scored 14 goals in 24 appearances with Portuguesa, including this absolute rocket from 40 yards. Attention MLS defenders: Close down from distance. Check it out for yourself:

So...any NFL, NBA, or golfer could do that...shoot I once saw Pete Rose kick a soccer ball through Peles legs and into a soccer ball goal...shoot I played soccer ball when i wuz 8 and I scored a goal from midfield...I am sayin this for no reason...sorry...just thought I would beat the hillbillies to it!

Great strike...look out MLS.
