Jermain Defoe scores again as his Tottenham Hotspur farewell begins
Jermain Defoe’s first hello to the Toronto FC faithful will take place in a press conference Monday morning, and on Saturday he began his Tottenham farewell in style.
The MLS club’s new striker scored the insurance goal in Spurs’ 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, making him the joint second-leading Premier League scorer in the Tottenhm’s history alongside another striker that made the jump across the Atlantic, Robbie Keane. The goal was a typically opportunistic bit of finishing for Defoe, who took advantage of a nice ball from Aaron Lennon, fighting through a tackle to chip Palace keeper Julián Speroni. Video of the goal also available here (for now).
The cheer for Defoe’s goal was only slightly louder than the ovation the striker received upon entering the match. Clearly, Tottenham fans will miss the striker, while his team (and manager) will need to find goals in other places. If the club doesn’t make any signings in the January transfer window, it will have just two first-team strikers (Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor) on the roster when Defoe departs at the end of February. After today Defoe will have eight more games with Spurs before moving across the pond.
Also of note from this match, Crystal Palace’s Jason Puncheon with one of the worst penalty misses ever. It actually gets more perplexing the more you watch it.
