Jozy Altidore plays key role in two Sunderland goals as a sub vs. Fulham
Jozy Altidore has found himself in and out of the Sunderland lineup after his $13 million transfer from AZ Alkmaar in the off-season, and he started Saturday’s game against Clint Dempsey and Fulham on the bench. However, while Dempsey had relatively little impact in Fulham’s 4-1 loss to Sunderland at Craven Cottage, Jozy Altidore came on and provided perhaps the brightest moment for Americans abroad in the last few weeks.
But it says a lot about the state of Americans abroad that the moment was winning a penalty…that someone else (Adam Johnson) took. Anyway, here’s the play:
Theatrical? For sure. But regardless, the penalty gave Johnson a hat trick and completed the spoiling of Dempsey’s start. Altidore motioned like he wanted t o take the penalty after it was given, but there doesn’t appear to be any hard feeling between the two:
Altidore also played a key role in the build up to Johnson’s second goal from a nice counterattacking move. You can see him at the very beginning of this clip:
So, is Jozy Altidore scoring in the EPL like many U.S. fans hoped he would? No. But you gotta take your positive where you can find them, I suppose.
